Illustrating a Comic Book Poem – Unflow

Unflow was illustrated using ink on watercolour paper. I used an ink pen and kept the style purely as black and white (apart from when writing the title of the Comic Book Poem). This allowed me to interpret the words and the story and develop a character. For the protagonist I focused on a twig like body wearing a mask. I felt like location was a major element of Unflow. I wanted it to take place in a forest, so I designed the character to reflect this. The fact that he wears a mask is to grant a personality, but also to conceal him. We are not looking at his true face and this adds a level of mystery to the Comic Book Poem. This mystery is also reflected in the antagonist’s who pursue our hero.
The text on the final page takes up most of the panel. I wanted the lettering to be done by hand as if the protagonist had written it himself after surviving the pursuit that makes up the story of Unflow.
