When designing the visuals for Big Words I came up with the story first. I wanted the character to be trapped, but not in a prison. I knew the words would be intimate and subtle and I wanted the illustrations to reflect this. Other than putting the character in a literal prison I created an abstract prison of a circle.
I also wanted this Comic Book Poem to be somewhat non-sequitor in its panel sequence. We see the character from different angles and focus on different parts of his anatomy, but mostly his head and face.
For material again I made use of Marker Pens on watercolour paper. I wanted the character and the background to be colourful and stand out. The words could be seen as bleak, but I didn’t want the reader to be taken into a dark and dismal world. Having a colourful world shows a degree of optimism.
