I am a big fan cassettes and still occasionally buy cassettes now and again. Though this is only from new artists who are making physical copies of their work. I really enjoy the act of holding a cassettes and putting it into a tape deck to play music. It has a nice ritualistic feeling about it and it adds to the magic of the music. Clicking play on a laptop feels a bit too generic and easy. It also feels a bit too much like work, whilst holding a cassette is something special and unique.
I wanted to capture this magic in the character design for the protagonist for Yup Yup. The first page of the Comic Book Poem tells the story. Here I made use of big and bold imagery. I was mainly influence by graphic design and clean and crisp imagery. It would have been too easy to put the illustrations into Adobe Illustrator to develop the style, however the theme of Comic Book Poems Series 5 is Marker Pens. I developed Yup Yup to have bold panels and a majestic character with pens and fineliners. I feel that this makes the Comic Book Poem more tactile and organic and this is also expressed in my feelings for analogue casettes.
